AMVETS POST 88 presents the 2nd Annual Labor Day Marathon

Saturday, September 5, 2009, A Car-Truck-Bike Show hosted by the Son’s of AMVETS Squadron 88, Bronson (next to the Speedway on S.R. 24). Music is by DJ Jeff. Come try our delicious pulled pork plate ($6) or chicken leg quarters ($5) with sides. We have door prizes too! Pre-registration is $15, or day of show $20. Registration is open from 9:00 am until noon. Awards presented at 2:00 pm. You can pick up a registration form at Ace Hardware in Bronson or at Post 88.

Sunday, September 6 a KARAOKE CONTEST. Contest starts at 1:00 pm at AMVETS Post 88 on S.R. 24 just east of the racetrack. This year there will be a junior and senior division. Juniors are age 15 and under and seniors start at age 16 and up. Entry fee is $5. There will be 1st and 2nd place money awarded for the junior division and 1st through 3rd place money will be awarded for the senior division. AMVETS will provide the judges for the competition. Contestants are asked to arrive early to register. You will be judged on two songs no longer than 4 minutes each. Judging is on technical difficulty, personal appearance, and vocal ability, eye contact with the audience and judges, and overall presentation of your song selections.

Monday, September 7 LIFESOUTH will have the Bloodmobile at AMVETS Post 88. We will also be having a membership drive for the AMVETS, SONS and AUXILIARY as well as another cookout. Please remember to donate blood or plasma as there is always a need.

We moved in Saturday, November 1, 2008. Since then, we have been working hard hanging plaques, pictures and awards to make our Post one you would want to call home. We are already adding an addition on the back as the main room fills up with guests coming and going. This addition is still under construction, however.

We purchased some new tables and chairs for those that prefer not to sit up at the bar. We also have a jukebox playing your favorite tunes as well as TVs to watch your favorite sport.

We pride ourselves on being community-oriented and work on programs to help the people in our community, like the Bronson Youth League, the Bronson Elementary School, and the Levy ARC. After our Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak race (April 25), we plan to start some new community projects. We love our vets and our latest venture involve helping other vets, so look for more information on this website soon.

We, the mothers, wives, widows, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, and granddaughters of AMVETS and female veterans, fully realizing our responsibilities to the community, State and nation, associate ourselves for the following purposes: to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; to safeguard the principles of freedom, liberty and justice for all, to promote the cause of perpetual peace and goodwill among nations; to maintain inviolate the freedom of our country; to preserve the fundamentals of democracy and Americanism; to perpetuate the friendships and associations of the great war of liberation; and to dedicate ourselves to the cause of mutual assistance...this of the grace of God.

Misc Information
The Rosen Centre is the host hotel for the Florida conventions. Hotels closer (in front) and less expensive ($59) are:
Days Inn [IHop restaurant], Clarion and Red Roof Inn. The rate for the Rosen is $89 per night. The above motels are right in front of the Rosen and there is also a Denny's and a Red Lobster right on sight.

The next S.E.C. meeting is October 30-November 1, 2009. Preregistration is $5.00 or $10.00 at the S.E.C. Deadline for pregistration is October 15.

Qualifications for Membership into AMVETS Organization

Any person who served or is currently serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America at any time after September 15, 1940 is eligible for regular membership in AMVETS provided such service, when terminated by discharge or release from active duty, be by honorable discharge or honorable separation or general discharge under honorable conditions. Any American citizen, as an American citizen, who served in the Armed Forces of an allied nation of the United States at any time after September 15, 1940 and before May 8, 1975, is eligible for regular membership in AMVETS provided such service when terminated by discharge or release from active duty be by honorable discharge or separation.

No person who is a member of, or working for the overthrow of the United States Government by force, and no American citizen or permanent resident alien in the United States, one of its territories, possessions or the District of Columbia who refuses to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States shall be privileged to become, or continue to be a member of this organization.

Honorary membership shall not be granted after the adoption of this amendment. In lieu thereof, certificates of merit may be awarded by a suitably inscribed award given to those rendering distinct service to the community and to veterans. Such awards may be made by Posts, internal administrative groups, State departments, the national executive committee, or national convention. Awards by Posts and internal administrative groups must be approved by department executive committees.

No person shall be a member of more than one Post at any one time. No person expelled by one Post shall be eligible for membership in any other Post without the consent of the expelling Post or the consent of the Department Executive Committee after hearing an appeal.

Any member of AMVETS classified as a member-at-large may not hold an elected or appointed office at any level in the AMVETS organization.

Membership shall run from January 1 through December 31. All AMVETS subordinate organizations shall maintain the same calendar year for their membership. Eligibility for Membership and the rights and privileges of members shall be as provided in the Constitution and By-Laws and the terms of membership and requirements for holding office within AMVETS shall not be discriminatory on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.

SONS OF AMVETS MEMBERSHIP

Eligibility

Eligibility for membership in the Sons of AMVETS shall be limited to all male descendents, grandsons, adopted sons and stepsons, fathers, husbands, widowers, and brothers of members of AMVETS and the deceased members of AMVETS, or the personnel who died and would have been eligible for membership in the parent organization, and are at least eighteen (18) years of age and is not eligible for membership in the parent organization. This is not to include in-laws of any type.

We, the Sons of AMVETS (American Veterans), fully realizing our responsibility to our parents, community, State and Nation, associate ourselves for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;

Post 26 Makes Us Their Brother Post

On a recent vacation to Mansfield, Ohio Margie & Clyde McGarva, Sandy Russell, Ron Bews and Ken Veltrop visited AMVETS Post 26 in Mansfield. We left September 5, 2008 and arrived on Saturday, September 6 in the afternoon after a lengthy ride and overnight stay in Georgetown, KY. We were, to our surprise, told that we were all going to spend the night in Mansfield so that we did not have a long drive that evening to Camp Toodik, in Loudonville, were we were staying for the week.

Tim Martin (Tim and Eileen were married at our new Post in August) picked us up from the motel in a van that Post 26 has just acquired. We were chauffeured to the Post for a night full of installation ceremonies and camaraderie. To this end, we met some new friends from Post 26 and had a great time visiting everyone.

Our week's stay was at a campground, Camp Toodik, at Loudonville, which was 19 miles from Mansfield over some very tricky twists and turns (especially at night). Clyde and Ken took a canoe trip down the river (approx. 10 miles) and enjoyed the paddling and sights. Ken toured the grounds at Camp Toodik and found lots of mysterious berries (some of which he nibbled), black walnuts, Buckeyes and some gorgeous wild flowers. He picked a bouquet and brought them to the table for all to enjoy.

Our accommodations were small but we made do. The beds were not the most comfortable. We grilled out one night and had chili one night (brought from home). We enjoyed one another's company, did laundry and spent a lot of time at Post 26.

Barbie & Larry invited us over for a cookout the following Monday, hamburgers and hotdogs and the best corn on the cob--with all trimmings. Invited guests brought covered dishes and desserts and everything was absolutely delicious.

Thanksgiving Baskets to Needy

Post members filled three baskets for needy families in Bronson. Baskets were delivered Wednesday and the recipients were very grateful for our helping hand. Thank you to everyone who donated food. Way to go Post 88! Two of the families are pictured below with members of the Post.

Post88 served up Thanksgiving dinner to members and guests. Ken “Cookie” V. cooked up some turkeys and we had all the trimmings thanks to some good food brought in by members. What a scrumptious meal! This reporter went home stuffed and had to take a nap.

Veterans Day Spaghetti Dinner

The Post celebrated Veteran’s Day, November 11, with a spaghetti dinner prepared by Ken “Cookie” Veltrop who volunteered (nothing unusual about that) to cook for the Post, family and veterans.

Our special guests that day were Dee Hillary and her two sons, John and Kevin. Hillary is a Teacher’s Aide at Williston High and works with students from the 9th-12th grades. She came up with the idea to have students write a thank you to all the veterans. Other teachers heard about this project and decided that they too would like to have their classes join in this effort. Her idea was spawned by her own experience while on a visit to Freeport, FL to visit family. On an outing at the USAF Armament museum and then to the Navy museum in Pensacola watching the Blue Angels practice. It was then that her Uncle spoke about the thankless jobs our service men & women do to protect our country and the people. No one ever takes the time to say “thank you” and it was with this thought in mind that Dee decided to do something to honor her Uncle and all the men and women who sacrificed their lives for us to keep our country free. With her family’s encouragement, she decided that the students should hear her own family’s true story to realize what these men and women went through in times of war.

Dee and her sons brought the letters, all 270 of them to the Post Sunday and we all enjoyed hearing her story and talking with John & Kevin about school, their activities and interests and we even had another guest there, Pete Fusco, whose interest in ultra light airplanes sparked a conversation among John and Kevin. We would like to thank the following teachers at Williston High School for helping Dee Hillary bring to the attention of the students the importance of taking the time to say “thank you” to our veterans by expressing their thoughts in thank you cards. Thank you to Mr. Tahfs, Señora Perez, Coach V, Mrs. Hillary, Mr. Masyada, Mrs. Russ, Miss Morrison. We appreciate you!

The cards are being distributed to veterans of our Post, the Veterans Hospital in Gainesville and also to our armed forces overseas through our Veterans Service Officer.

Wild Hog Notes

This year we are selling pocket T-shirts with a newly designed front. We need more volunteers to help this year with the race. Anyone you know that is willing to help out, please let Sandy know. This year we will need to recruit more sponsors. Christmas cards will be sent to past sponsors to let them know we will be counting on their support for this next Wild Hog race. The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 19 due to the holiday.

New Building Update

Plans have been completed (redrawn) and were ready for viewing November 14 at Post headquarters. We hope to get the well in before the end of the year. More information as it comes in.

Karaoke

More karaoke disks are being purchased. Karaoke night seems to be any night more than one person wants to sing. Our DJ Jimmy is doing a great job at keeping up with the music, and when he is not available Sandy has she has also been great at operating the karaoke equipment.

Christmas Party

The Post Christmas Party is Sunday, December 16 at Post headquarters. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a gift not over $10 for a male or female. The Post will furnish the meat and covered dishes and/or appetizers are welcome by members. I’m sure there will be some karaoke going on.

September Newsletter

It's been a very warm summer and I doubt if it cools off any time soon. We have had quite a lot going on since the beginning of the year as far as illness and losing family members. Kathy Sparks has been busy sending our cards to our families who have lost loved ones.

August 11 - Ladies Day on the River

September 3 Labor-Day Drawing

Monthly Cookouts

Cookouts at the Post site will resume the 1st Saturday in October. It's just been too hot to cook.

Wild Hog

The Wild Hog Committee has been meeting since June and have come up with some ideas for making more money. There will be some general meetings announced throughout the year. Put September 25 on your calendar for the next Wild Hog general meeting.

Ladies Auxiliary Eligibility for Membership

Eligibility for membership in AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary is limited to the mothers, wives, grandmothers, regardless of age, and the daughters, sisters and granddaughters, not less than 18 years of age, of regular members of AMVETS and mothers and widows, regardless of age, and daughters, sisters and granddaughters not less than 18 years of age, of deceased veterans who would have been eligible for membership in AMVETS, and female veterans who served honorably in the Armed Allied Countries after September 15, 1940, who maintain their AMVETS Membership unless they meet the established eligibility criteria. The term "mother" shall be construed so as to include any female member of the family of, or any female guardian of such person or deceased veteran who as exercised or in exercising the care and responsibility of the rearing of such person or deceased veteran. The term "daughter" for a stepdaughter must have been a dependent of an AMVETS member or deceased veteran prior to attaining 18 years of age.

A person shall become a member of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary upon written application, establishing her eligibility, certification by the local AMVETS Adjutant, and payment of dues to all levels as required by the Constitution.

No person who is a member of, or who advocated the principles of any organization believing in, or working for the overthrow of the United States Government by force, and no person who refuses to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States shall be privileged to become or continue to be a member of any AMVETS Ladies organization.

AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary #88 Application Form

For more than 50 years AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary have served veterans and their communities through programs such as John Tracy Clinic (for hearing impaired and deaf children ages 18 months to 5 years), PAWS With a Cause (who trains Assistance Dogs for people with disabilities), Scholarships, St. Jude's Hospital for Children, Veterans Affairs Volunteer Serrrvices programs (VAVS) and Freedom's Foundation just to mention a few.

A network of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary members across the country provides a team work of support for local volunteers. Volunteering is the heart of AMVETS Ladies auxiliary. Volunteer services are recognized through an extensive award program both on the department and national level.

It is up to us to keep a watchful eye on all Capitol Hill legislation and aggressively pursue every congressional bill that is likely to affect veterans--to ensure there is no erosion of their entitlements. Vetran's health care, POW/MIA accountability, services for homeless veterans, national defense and foreign relations are all issues of importance to AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary and its parent organization of AMVETS.

We would like to invote you to become part of our network of volunteers dedicated to serving our nation's veterans and the local communities in which they and you reside.
